Overview tour of the residence

The Wittelsbach Palace

Impressions

Description:

Experience the castle of the Wittelsbach ruling family on a private tour for a maximum of 20 people.

I would be delighted to take you on a journey through the centuries, through state rooms, chambers, court chapels, and courtyards. All richly furnished with treasures, deliberately chosen by the respective duke, elector, or king to impress – naturally in keeping with the fashion of the time – the 'who's who' of European nobility.

This splendor invites us to repeatedly look behind the scenes and to get to know the rulers, their families, their ideas and the spirit of the times of the different eras better.

Even the model of the residence at the beginning of the tour hints that you could easily spend a whole day enjoying yourself at the palace. But don't worry, I'll try to summarize the highlights of this residence for you in a way that's easy to digest, so that after our tour you feel you've gained a good overview.

Right at the beginning, we work our way through the impressive family tree of the Wittelsbachs, who ruled Bavaria for over 700 years – designed by the Grand Master of Bavarian Rococo, Francois de Cuvillies, for one of the most ambitious princes of the noble family.

Afterwards, we continue to one of the most fascinating Renaissance halls north of the Alps: in the Antiquarium we can perfectly immerse ourselves in the time of the late 16th century.

The subsequent sequence of rooms from the early and late Baroque periods also tell a story and much about the patrons, who never lost sight of the Wittelsbachs' power claims with their banquet halls and churches.

Join me in looking forward to one of the most diverse museums in our city!

At a glance:

Look forward to a varied tour through playful courtyards, a deeply impressive Renaissance ballroom, Baroque private chambers, a splendid suite of rooms from the Rococo period, a magnificent court chapel, and the neoclassical royal building in new splendor.
Explore the Bavarian rulers' city palace on different tours: currently, I offer an overview tour or a tour of the newly renovated Royal Building. Both tours can be combined.
Hear about the fate of the Residence during the Second World War and learn about the reconstruction efforts that were and are being made to preserve this work of art for us in all its splendor, even today.

My tips for before and after our tour:

After our tour, you deserve a nice glass of wine, because there's nothing better than enjoying the cultural highlights in the Palatinate Residence Wine Tavern to review the past in the inner courtyard of the Kaiserhof wing. Or you can deepen your knowledge with a visit to the Bavarian National Museum, where you will encounter the treasures of some of the people you met on our tour.

But if, like the rulers of old, you now crave some country air, then why not enjoy yourself in the garden of the Nymphenburg Palace or on a long walk through the English Garden. And if you would like to bring the day to a fitting close, then why not attend one of the exquisite concerts that still fill the Residence with beautiful sounds – either in the Court Chapel or in the Hercules Hall, the performance venue of the BR Symphony Orchestra.

Frequently asked questions:

How long should you plan for a tour of the residence?

You could actually spend days in these venerable rooms! However, you can at least get a good impression of this ensemble of rooms on a roughly two-hour tour. If you can spare an extra hour, all the better, because then you'll also have time to take a look inside the New Royal Building.

Is the Cuvilliés Theater part of the tour?

We'd be happy to include this fantastic Rococo theater, where even W.A. Mozart premiered his Idomeneo, in our tour. Just contact me, and we'll plan your residency experience together.

Can I leave my bags and coat?

Yes, that's certainly possible. Backpacks and larger bags are not allowed anyway. In winter, it's advisable to at least keep on a light jacket, as the premises are only minimally heated.
