The Munich bike tour

Impressions

Description:

Depending on how much time you have, we can actually cycle to almost all of Munich's sights.

Our route takes us along designated cycle paths or quiet side streets, from where you can enjoy the city's historical scenery or immerse yourself in Munich life. Passing bustling markets, inviting banks of the Isar River, and impressive facades, you'll discover Munich beyond the tourist hotspots, which, of course, are also important stops along our route.

In keeping with Munich's relaxed pace, our tour will proceed at a leisurely pace, allowing us ample time for breaks – whether at one of the markets, a street café, or one of Munich's lively beer gardens, the choice is yours. I'd be delighted to plan your very own "Munich open-air experience" with you! Depending on your particular interests and priorities, I'll design the route to perfectly suit your taste.

Of course, we'll tailor our route to the composition of your group, and children are always welcome. Even though my daughters are older now, I still remember where the most exciting playgrounds are! Incidentally, despite our proximity to the Alps, Munich is relatively flat – only the banks of the Isar River can present a challenge in terms of elevation gain, which we'll tackle together at a leisurely pace. An excursion to the northern part of our city will take you past the famous Eisbach surfers and along winding paths in the English Garden, as well as through the sophisticated Schwabing district. There, the formerly rural village center and the trendy neighborhood with its fantastic facades, small cafes, and shops are just a stone's throw from each other. If time allows, we'll continue our ride towards the Olympic Park, where we can feel like Olympic athletes ourselves, nestled among the hills and under the tent-like roof structure. From there, we'll either return via the Kunstareal (Art District), where we can comfortably get an overview of the city's most important museums from the saddle. And if your schedule and energy levels allow, you can even make a detour to Nymphenburg Palace on the way back. The southern route, on the other hand, first takes us to the other side of the Isar River, past the Angel of Peace and into the elegant Bogenhausen district, whose Gründerzeit villas invite you to dream of bygone days. The Prinzregententheater and the Villa Stuck then mark the border with Haidhausen, which, along with Au and Giesing, once had a very different reputation as a so-called "glass shard district"—the Müller'sches Volksbad (public bath) could still tell you a thing or two about that. Today, that's long forgotten, and these districts are very popular with Munich residents not only for living but also for shopping and relaxation. Especially in Giesing, you can discover many works of art from Munich's street art scene. The return journey can be made either along the Isar or past the Old Southern Cemetery, which, with the graves of prominent Munich residents, exudes a very special atmosphere. But the west, with the Theresienwiese, the vibrant Westend district, and the Westpark, is definitely worth a bike ride! No matter which direction we ultimately head in, you decide the route and duration! I, on the other hand, promise to advise you in the best possible way, tailored to your wishes. Let's go!

„As part of our GetYourGuide „Everything Right Here“ campaign in the summer of 2020, we organized a bike tour through Munich with journalists, led by Grit and Radius Tours. The aim was to show local female press representatives their own city from new perspectives and to explore unknown places and stories of Munich’s „urban jungle“. Grit guided us to exciting corners of Munich with a wealth of expertise and a very friendly manner – it was a fantastic tour.“

My tips for before and after our tour:

After our tour, you definitely deserve some relaxation! So why not take some time to reflect on the day?

This works best from one of Munich's rooftop terraces. Enjoy your cocktail on the hotel roof. Bayerischer Hof, Mandarin Oriental or German Oak, while you relax and gaze at the sunset, proud of the kilometers you've covered. And should your calves start to burn, you can soothe such tension in style with a dip in the Art Nouveau ambiance of the Gründerzeit-era building. Müller's Public Baths. But cultural experiences can also help combat muscle soreness, and Munich, as everyone knows, has plenty of that – in the State Opera, dem Prince Regent Theatre, on the many theater stages or even in one of the romantic backyard theaters.

Frequently asked questions:

Do you learn some background information about Munich on the bike tour in addition to facts and figures?

I tend to refrain from using numbers and names on my tours anyway, as they're hard to remember as a guest. My goal is more to convey a sense of our city. This works best in the individual neighborhoods, which are particularly easy to reach and explore by bike.

Can you leave your bikes at some point during the tour and continue on foot?

Sure, that's actually a good idea. Especially if we're also checking out the sights in the city center. Cycling is often not allowed in the pedestrian zones, so it's better to dismount anyway. And then we'll hop back on the saddle to explore Munich off the beaten track by bike.

Can I have a snack during the tour?

Absolutely! Whether it's a pretzel from the bakery along the route or a planned stop at a restaurant, anything is possible here. And I can assure you: we'll find a good selection of diverse beer gardens along the way – just as you'd expect in Munich!

"Grit and I have known each other for a few years now. We met when she stopped by our Christmas market with her Schmankerln tours. There are some people who just click, and that was the case with Grit and me. I love her warm, fresh, direct, professional, and open manner.
Over time, a friendly relationship has developed that extends beyond the tours, which I greatly appreciate. It's always a highlight for me when she visits me with her guests or stops by for a private chat."
