Find out why some street names in Munich were not popular, so people looked for a distinctive alternative. |
Impressions
Description:
This walk is a colorful mix of old and new, witty and tragic, amusing and sardonic, medieval and ultra-modern. We'll talk about buildings and squares, facts and legends, and, of course, the people behind all the diverse little details. It's simply about the mostly overlooked details that we all know, yet still know nothing about. We'll meander along the right and left sides of the pedestrian zone toward Marienplatz, looking for locations where there's less going on. Let yourself be surprised and look forward to discovering the little secrets of our city!
The most important things in brief:
Meeting point:
under the Karlstor at Stachus
public transport:
U4/U5 or all S-Bahn lines at Karlsplatz/Stachus
Duration:
bookable as a 2-hour tour
Distance:
approx. 2 km
My tips for before and after our tour:
Since we begin this tour at Stachus, it's a good idea to visit a somewhat lesser-known memorial beforehand. The permanent exhibition on the Nazi trial of the "White Rose," aptly titled "Arbitrariness in the Name of the People," is held in the almost completely preserved Courtroom 216, where the first three members of this resistance group were sentenced to death in 1943. The courthouse alone, with its impressive architecture, is worth seeing. But beware: Please allow sufficient time due to the security check at the entrance.
Perhaps our tour has whetted your appetite, and you'd like to explore more works of art from the urban art scene. Then I highly recommend the exhibition at MUCA, Germany's first museum for street art. There, you can also enjoy a coffee at the "Mural" or a Michelin-starred meal, complete with a view of Sahid Dokin's artwork "Chalchihuite"!
Frequently asked questions:
Is it possible to visit the Pater Noster at the police headquarters on Ettstrasse during our tour?
Unfortunately, for security reasons, we are not allowed to enter the building as a group. Nevertheless, you will learn interesting stories about the police headquarters and its (TV) detectives.
Can I have a snack during the tour?
Of course, there are various options along this route as well. For example, a small snack in a legendary tavern. Or a more sophisticated snack bar in the Neue Maxburg, where you can sit and relax, shielded from the daily hustle and bustle of the city.
Would you recommend this tour for my family celebration, even though not everyone knows Munich well?
As always, I'm very flexible in adapting to your group! Depending on your previous knowledge, this tour can also be designed as a mix of well-known sights and little secrets. This way, there's sure to be something for everyone, and everyone will be more familiar with Munich afterward.
