In the belly of the city
DELICIOUS TOUR OF THE VIKTUALIENMARKT
![]() |
Let yourself be tempted by appetizingly presented specialties that are almost too beautiful to eat, but simply taste too good to only present in front of the camera. |
![]() |
Enjoy sweet and sour, savory and fruity, Bavarian and international at one of the most famous and atmospheric markets in Europe. |

As you sample our beer, you'll discover the stories surrounding Munich's cuisine and, of course, our beer. We'd be happy to offer a tasting, too! |
Description:
The way to a person's heart is through their stomach! The same goes for Munich, because strolling through the city with a pretzel in hand is twice as much fun! On this Viktualienmarkt tasting tour, our crispy traditional pastries are naturally just as much a part of the experience as hearty Bavarian sausages, tasty dishes from Alpine pasture-fed cattle, spicy dishes from all over the world, sweet treats from sizzling pots of lard, and, of course, healthy options from the Munich area. And if you'd like to know where you can clearly taste that Munich is arguably Italy's northernmost city, then just come along! We'll enjoy a delicious meal between the colorful awnings and the typical green stalls.
To avoid overcrowding at the market, this tour is only offered by selected guides and must be registered with the market management. Therefore, please request your very own Viktualienmarkt experience in advance so I can reserve your preferred date. As long as social distancing requirements remain in place due to the coronavirus pandemic, the number of participants for this tour is limited to small groups.
The most important things in brief:
Meeting point:
at the fish fountain on Marienplatz
public transport:
U3/U6 or all S-Bahn lines at Marienplatz
Duration:
Can be booked as a 2-hour tour, can be extended as desired
Distance:
only a few hundred meters
My tips for before and after our tour:
This tour can easily be incorporated into a perfect day in Munich, ideally when you're feeling hungry, of course! Then simply continue your stroll through the Old Town. Or relax in the beer garden, where you can enjoy the cozy Munich atmosphere from your bench and watch the bustling market in peace. The Beer and Oktoberfest Museum is also just a stone's throw away. And if you prefer a less traditional museum, I recommend the MUCA, our "Museum of Urban and Contemporary Art," where the icons of urban art are honored until June, including originals by Banksy.
Frequently asked questions:
Is the Viktualienmarkt also open on Sundays?
Almost all stalls are closed on Sundays. However, the beer garden opens on Sundays when the weather is nice, so you can sit comfortably there. Otherwise, there's something going on from early morning until late at night.
On my last visit to the market I couldn't find the maypole. Why?
Well, our landmark at the market square, the famous white and blue maypole, has unfortunately also fallen victim to the coronavirus pandemic. It was supposed to be replaced in spring 2020. The old one had already been dismantled before the COVID-19 outbreak, but the new one could neither be completed (it's always a collaborative project!) nor erected. So let's hope for May 2021, when our Viktualienmarkt will be complete again!
My daughter is a vegetarian. Does it still make sense for her to participate in this tour?
Of course! The sausage stand might be a bit of a challenge. But otherwise, there's plenty of vegetarian options on this tour.
