Of villages, dachshunds and roofs

Munich's Olympic Park

Description:

You hardly know where to look first! The Olympic venues with their legendary tent-like roof structure, the former Olympic Village, the Olympic Tower, and all of this right next to the striking BMW Four-Cylinder Building and the BMW World of Experiences! No wonder that here in the Olympic Park, like nowhere else in Munich, you can hear stories of the sporting achievements of a Mark Spitz, the young Ulrike Mayfarth, or the national football team.

Experience the 1972 Games in all their facets, from sporting to architectural, colorful to sustainable, joyful to tragic, and discover why the people of Munich still love this venue today and make it one of the most frequently used Olympic venues.

Join us for this impressive walk! And who knows, maybe we'll even run into the mascot dachshund in his colorful striped outfit?

Hardly anyone believed it would be successful when Munich submitted its bid for the 1972 Summer Olympics in the mid-1960s. As the former "capital of the movement," it was considered unlikely to win. And when the sensation was complete in April 1966, Munich seized the opportunity to present itself as cosmopolitan, open-minded, and modern. Within a very short time, the "Oberwiesenfeld," a former airfield, was transformed into one of the most spectacular Olympic venues of all time!

Walk with me on the trail of this idea, which even today, exactly half a century later, is still palpable everywhere: In the Olympic Village, an oasis of peace thanks to its sophisticated traffic concept, appreciated by residents and students alike. Discover the diverse perspectives of this special district, among the terraced apartment blocks where the male athletes were formerly housed, or amidst the lovingly painted bungalows of the former female athletes, which are now used as student apartments. Or on the winding paths in the Olympic Park, which captivates with its diverse range of venues.

The architects around Günther Behnisch and the engineer Frey Otto were responsible for this overall concept. With the construction of the transparent, tent-like Olympic roof, they achieved an architectural masterpiece that still impresses today not only with its uniqueness but also, quite simply, with its beauty. Combined with the innovative and vibrant color concept of designer Otl Aicher, the area continues to present itself as a symbol of diversity, tolerance, and openness. Not to be forgotten is the careful landscaping with water, meadows, and paths – best admired from the very top! So, either take the elevator up to the Olympic Tower or perhaps even take a walk up the Olympic Hill, a former rubble heap of the city that has been perfectly integrated into the terrain and now boasts a beer garden.

But we should not forget to also remember the victims of the Olympic attack by the "Black September" terrorists. Various memorials in the Olympic Park invite us to remember the events surrounding the Israeli Olympic team. A new memorial pavilion was recently opened, which, through its meticulous treatment of the events, not only illuminates the end of the utopia of a non-violent international festival, but also describes the failure of the Federal Republic of Germany in dealing with the Palestinian hostage-takers.

My tips for before and after our tour:

You could actually spend your entire perfect day exploring the exciting grounds of the Olympic Park. For example, you could change your perspective by going up the Olympic Tower (currently closed for renovations until 2026) or by visiting the Skylift can be lifted high. Anyone who, after our open-air experience, is in the mood for something more technical shouldn't miss the BMW Experience World! Or in the BMW Museum Admire the car manufacturer's nostalgic models. But if hunger strikes, a delicious snack awaits you at... Beer garden on the Olympic Hill where you're rewarded for the steep climb with a fantastic view over the city. And who knows, maybe you'll even hear the sounds of an open-air concert from the Olympic Stadium? Those traveling with children might also enjoy a visit to... Sea Life Munich, The aquariums, which are also located on the Olympic grounds, are a great place to visit. A visit is also highly recommended after a busy day in Munich's city center. There's no better way to end a balmy summer evening!

Frequently asked questions:

Will we also visit the site of the assassination attempt at Connollystrasse 31 on this tour?

The house where the Israeli Olympic team was held, which we still know from television broadcasts from that time, is, of course, on our route. However, it is not open to visitors. The hostages' apartment now houses a guesthouse for the Max Planck Society, but a memorial plaque in front of the entrance commemorates the victims.

Does the tour include a ride up the Olympic Tower?

Unfortunately, the Olympic Tower is showing its age and is currently closed for renovations. But as soon as it reopens, we can include this experience in our tour. Perhaps we'll be lucky enough to see the snow-covered Alps? But the view over the Olympic grounds alone is well worth the short elevator ride. And up top, you can enjoy a light meal in Restaurant 181 or visit the Munich Rock Museum.

Do sporting events still take place on the Olympic grounds today?

Yes, because even though football moved to the Allianz Arena a few years ago, the area continues to be used for sports. Running enthusiasts dream of crossing the finish line at the Munich Marathon, while daring snowboarders and BMX riders dream of the Munich Mash. Furthermore, the 2022 European Championships were a huge success, marking the return of athletics to the stadium for its 50th anniversary.
