Guided tour of the exhibition at the MUCA

The exhibition celebrates more than twenty years of the artist's career and brings together over fifty key works from Micallef's oeuvre, as well as an impressive new series of paintings created specifically for the museum presentation. Together, these works offer a comprehensive overview of one of the most distinctive and influential painters of the early 21st century.

„The Future Is Stupid“ was developed in close collaboration with the artist as part of a year-long artist-in-residence program, funded by the MUCA Foundation. It offers a rare opportunity to experience the full range of Micallef’s work. The exhibition unites painting, sculpture, animation, and politically engaged projects, showcasing an artist who continually pushes the expressive and critical potential of contemporary painting.

The exhibition „The Future Is Stupid“ traces the evolution of Micallef’s artistic practice, from his public appearance following recognition with the prestigious BP Portrait Prize to his appointment as a Louis Vuitton Visionary in the early 2020s.

In addition to important paintings from throughout his career, the exhibition will include a selection of rare bronze editions that have not been publicly displayed since their presentation at the Royal Academy in 2008.

The exhibition also illuminates Micallef's broader creative practice through several significant interdisciplinary projects. Among them is the impressive animated film based on Peter Gabriel's song "Love Will Heal," produced in collaboration with the Oscar-winning Aardman Animation Studio. Screened in the MUCA Bunker, the film offers visitors an immersive encounter with Micallef's visual language.

Also on display in the bunker: The exhibition reflects the artist's ongoing engagement with the dynamics of modern politics and also examines the impact of Micallef's widely circulated Trump project.

In this intervention, Micallef published a high-resolution image of a painting depicting the US president, packaged as a Marlboro cigarette design.

The image was downloaded more than 100,000 times within two weeks, subsequently reproduced and disseminated at protests around the world, demonstrating the ability of contemporary art to circulate rapidly in global political discourse.
